Membership
In Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons girls and adults discover the fun, friendship and power of girls and adults together. Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons is open to all girls grades K-12 and adult members 18+ in the Council’s jurisdiction which includes all of North and South Dakota, 13 Minnesota Counties and one county in Iowa. Fall registrations are held in many schools but you can become a Girl Scout any time throughout the year.
The goals of Girl Scout programs are to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. The model is based on three principles:
Girls discover their world and their own potential and strengthen their values
Girls connect with others through caring relationships and team building
Girls become empowered to take action and be advocates for themselves and others

There is one Girl Scout program adapted to meet the developmental, educational, emotional and social needs and interests of girls at six grade levels:
- Daisy
- Brownie
- Junior
- Cadette
- Senior
- Ambassador
Daisy Girl Scouts: Grade K - 1
As a Daisy Girl Scout you may do things like:
- Sing silly songs at day camp
- Make s'mores
- Attend a tea party with your favorite gal
- Plant a garden and watch it grow
- Make a finger puppet and put on a show with your friends
Brownie Girl Scouts: Grades 2 - 3
As a Brownie Girl Scouts you may try things like:
- Create a work of art that you wear or paint a design on a t-shirt
- Take a behind the scenes tour of a zoo
- Start a recycling center in your home or Girl Scout meeting place
- March in a 4th of July Parade
- Cook over the fire at day camp
Junior Girl Scouts: Grades 4 - 5
Junior Girl Scouts do new and fun things like:
- Make toys for animals at the local humane society
- Attend resident camp in Aberdeen, SD
- Explore the outdoors! Canoe, ski, ride horseback, snowshoe...
- Attend a play or musical and tour backstage
- Try everthing from photography and dramatics to fashion and computers
Cadette: Grades 6 - 8
As a Cadette Girl Scout you may:
- Climb the rock wall at the Circle of Courage challenge course in Bismarck, ND
- Take a trip to Savannah, GA to visit the birthplace of Girl Scouting
- Help groups of younger Girl Scouts by becoming a Program Aide
- Learn to use a positive mental attitude to deal with peer pressure and stress
- Create a community garden
Senior: Grades 9 - 10
As a Senior Girl Scout, you'll have amazing opportunities to do things like:
- Attend a Broadway Play on a trip to New York City and write a review
- Invest "play dough" in a stock market game and beat the experts
- Choose service projects that aim to address community issues such as poverty
- Challenge yourself through backpacking, canoeing, rafting or cycling advertures
- Create materials such as websites, how-to guides and events to educate others on creating a more inclusive environment
Ambassador: Grades 11 - 12
Ambassador Girl Scouts are learning to transform the world, doing things like:
- Use conflict-resolution skills to set up a peer/mediator program at your school
- Spend your summer working at an archeological dig
- Develop friendships with Girl Guides from other courntries through email, joint projects and visits to the four World Centers (India, England, Mexico,, Switzerland)
- Explore your future career options with a mentor or by job shadowing
- Earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, for implementing a project that benefits your community

Adult Membership
Volunteer adults are the heartbeat of our organization. Every program or event for girls is delivered by volunteers with support from council staff. That means Girl Scouts come in all age groups—you just need to have a desire to make a difference in the lives of girls. Adults 18 years of age and older can join Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons to serve as a Troop Facilitor, a mentor, a camp nurse, a cookie “mom," a board or committee member or in numerous other roles. Whatever your expertise, you can help us out! We’re looking for adults who believe in girls and want to support their development.
Membership in the Girl Scouts of the USA and a background check and references are required for all volunteer positions. Just a few of the volunteer opportunities with Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons are listed below:
- Troop Facilitator– Partner with girls to take responsibility for managing the troop/group and plan, carry out and evaluate activities based on interests and needs of the group.
- Service Unit Team Member – Organize regional events. Develop a plan to achieve service unit membership goals.
- Community School Coordinator – Coordinate and conduct girl/adult recruitment activities in the service unit area. Assist facilitators in securing meeting places, sponsorships, resource materials and planning parent meetings.
- Event Director – Term is dependent on time necessary to plan, promote, implement and evaluate an event. May direct one or more events throughout the year.
- Camp Volunteer – Volunteer for one or more camps. It is a time commitment of one or more days during the summer.
- Program Volunteer – Volunteer for one or more events throughout the year. Most events are 1.5 to 2 hours long. Assist with the setting up, cleaning up, and helping for the entire event!
- Cookie Shop Manager – Confirm cookie shop sites prior to the scheduled shop dates, schedule troops and independent Girl Scouts at each of the cookie shop sites, provide a cookie shop confirmation (date, time, location) to each participating troop and each participating business.
- Cookie Sales Coordinator – Ensure the distribution of cookie sale materials to participating troops. Provide support and guidance to troop cookie volunteers throughout the sale. Arrange for delivery and distribution of cookies to the troops. Collect and verify all sales-related forms and forward to the Director of Product Sales by the deadlines. Distribute theme merchandise and goal patches by the deadline.

Adult Training Course Descriptions
We know your time is precious. We also know working with girls is exciting and invigorating, but it can also be exhausting. We want to help you make the time you give the Girl Scouts, some of the most productive and satisfying time in your life. To do that, we provide training to prepare you for your role in Girl Scouts. Several of the Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons training programs are listed below.
Learning Opportunities - Adults

Membership in the Girl Scouts of the USA, a background check are required for all volunteer positions. In addition troop facilitators, require references and a personal interview for the safety of girls. Online Orientation
Get acquainted with Girl Scouting and the many rewarding opportunities it offers girls and adults! This course includes information about the Girl Scout mission, Promise and Law, history, membership requirements, and various pathways girls and adults participate in Girl Scouting. Leadership Essentials
Leadership Essentials is a module that will help prepare volunteers to effectively facilitate the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. Participants will learn the meaning of the three keys of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and how to facilitate activities so they are girl-led, cooperative and offer learning-by-doing. During the course, participants will explore various Girl Scout resource materials including the new Journey books. This learning opportunity is required for all adult volunteers.

Lifetime Membership
Lifetime Girl Scout members are an important part of our Girl Scout family. Lifetime Girl Scout membership supports the Lifetime Membership Endowment fund. Lifetime membership as a Girl Scout adult is open to any individual who accepts the principles and beliefs of the Girl Scout Movement, pays the one-time lifetime membership cost, and is 18 years old or older or is a high school graduate or the equivalent.
Lifetime membership dues are $250. A special lifetime membership, at the reduced cost of $130, is offered to girls who are registered Girls Scouts at the time of their high school graduation, provided they apply for lifetime membership before their current annual membership expires (September 30).
Becoming a lifetime member is easy. Simply complete the Girl Scout adult members registration form, including the lifetime membership section, and return the completed form along with your check, money order, or credit card information to Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons, 1101 S.
